12 Step Program
Why 12 Step Programs
At Addiction Counselor USA we follow The 12-Step philosophy pioneered by Alcoholics Anonymous. The 12 Step program is used by about 74 percent of treatment centers. The basic premise of this model is that people can help one another achieve and maintain abstinence from substances of abuse, but that healing cannot come about unless people with addictions surrender.
Twelve-Step Program counseling consists of a structured approach to achieving recovery, and will usually consist of up to 15 sessions. The sessions will typically be on a one-to-one basis, and each session will adopt a holistic approach to recovery that covers spiritual, mental and behavioral issues. Twelve Step counseling is particularly effective for those struggling with addictions to narcotics, prescription drugs, and alcohol.
Twelve Step Program counseling will usually begin with helping the patient find acceptance of the fact that they have a problem. Surrender is the second step, with the patient beginning to understand that they do not have full control of their lives and their addictions. The patients will then begin to confront and makes amends for past errors, and seek to make amends for those errors. This is a crucial step in the healing process, and can help individuals repair their personal and professional lives.
